Our History
Our Branch was established onJune 15, 1887, but was not
recognized Nationally until February 2, 1891. In June of 1868,a law
was passed for government workers called the "eight-hour law". This
law did not include Letter Carriers. It was a common practice for
Letter Carriers to work 12 to 16 hours a day continuously. A
Philadelphia Letter Carrier named Howard Dytch began to question the law.
In 1879, Mr. Dytch started his one man crusade to have the law rewritten to
include Letter Carriers. Armed with $50, he set out to Washington D.C.
to talk to any politician who would listen. It took 20 years and
countless trips to Washington for Howard Dytch to have the law rewritten to
include Letter Carriers.
